WITH MY NEEDLE CHART A WORK'D POCKETBOOK
Needlework pocketbooks, often called “worked” pocketbooks, were popular from about 1740 until 1790, and were used by both men and women to carry valuables. A short essay on embroidered pocketbooks is included in the product.
This design is an adaptation of an antique queen-stitched pocketbook that I bought at an antiques show. I used the same shape, ribbon closure, and motifs as on my antique, but I changed the thread colors. My adaptation is only slighter smaller than the original.
The model was stitched on 32-count Toasted Almond linen from Zweigart, Inc., using DMC embroidery thread and overdyed threads from The Gentle Art (Sampler Threads). DMC substitutions are given for the overdyed threads.
Stitched area size on 32-count linen: 5-3/8-inches wide x 11-1/8-inches high
Stitches used: queen, backstitch, and tent
Stitching directions, charts, stitch diagrams, and detailed assembly instructions are included.
