Sewing 101
Sewing 101

A great starter class if you've never used a machine, or an easy way to refresh your skills if you haven't sewn for a long time.

  • threading your machine
  • wind a bobbin and insert it properly
  • starting seams properly 
  • seam widths, stitch lengths
  • trimming corners, clipping and notching curves
  • grading seam allowances
  • under stitching
  • pressing versus ironing
  • adjusting tension to get perfect seams

Choose from the following dates:

Japanese Apron Japanese Apron

This is a very simple apron that pops over your head. It is often made with linen fabric. All straight sewing so it's suitable for a novice sewer. Learn to hem and mitre corners easily.

You can add curved-top pockets if you wish. This project lends itself to adding embroidered embellishments!

Tatting is enjoying a major comeback! Learn rings, chains, picots and joins in this starter class.

Finish by learning this lovely two-colour edging.

Expand your basic tatting skills by making one of these lovely ice drops! Learn how to add beads, join rings and chains to make a circle and incorporate a glass "gem" for added sparkle!!

Cross Stitch Cross Stitch

Learn essential cross stitch skills with this introductory class.  Stitch a bookmark to celebrate your community!  Image shows Nanaimo but the class can be customized to YOUR preference!

Skills: read a chart, how to do a cross stitch three different ways, start and end threads, finishing with nun stitch

Have a beautiful design or piece of fabric that is crying out to become a pillow cover?  Learn how to make a pillow insert and pillow back that easily folds to envelop the insert without zippers.

Learn both simple embroidery AND sewing!  Embroider the Jo Butler inspired dandelion fluff onto beautiful natural linen, then sew it into a practical and classic tea cozy!
